Frequently Asked Questions

  • Solar Powered Skylight (VSS)
  • Electric Skylights (VSE)

    Electric skylight questions:

The VSE must be installed between 15 & 90 degrees.

If your roof pitch is less than 15 degrees, you can use the VCS which is designed for flat roofs.

Our flashing kits are engineered with specific pitch requirements. The roof pitch is important because it ensures that the roof has the proper slope to effectively drain water off of both the flashing and the skylight.

The frame out size is the width and height of the Skylight.
The clearance between rafters must be at least width of the Skylight, battens are then placed at a distance equal to the height of the Skylight.

    Download framing out instruction.

Electric skylights cannot be installed sideways, however a 'landscape' size is available (S01 size: 1140x700).

VELUX COMBI-FLASHING is engineered for this purpose. However, the pitch of the roof must be 15° or greater.

The VSE comes standard with our 'High Performance' glazing.

This glazing provides a laminated internal pane to meet Australian Standard AS 1288 which is required for skylights installed greater than 3m above floor level. This glazing also comes with NEAT™ coating to reduce cleaning frequency.

Read more about our double glazing.

VELUX does not recommend the addition of any store-bought film to the glass of our skylights. The addition of store-bought film or tint will void the warranty on the glass. However, our glass is manufactured with a LoE coating and injected with Argon gas which makes our skylights very energy efficient. In addition, we also offer several blind options that can be added to our skylights and roof windows to regulate light and heat.

Yes, insect screens are included with openable skylights.

All current skylight have an exterior neutral grey colour that blends well with most roofing materials (similar to COLORBOND ironstone grey).

The internal colour is white to match white ceilings.

All sizes open to approximately 300mm.

Yes, the electric skylights comes with pre-installed rain sensor as standard. The internally mounted rain sensors automatically close the skylight when rain is detected.

Yes, blinds are available for new VSE Skylights. If you have an existing Skylight (manufactured prior to April 2010) please contact VELUX with your product code to see if blinds are still available.

  • Fixed Skylights (FS)

    Fixed skylight questions:

The FS must be installed between 15 & 90 degrees.

If your roof pitch is less than 15 degrees, you must use a custom flashing kit with a pitch adapter. You may also want to consider using our flat roof skylight if you don't need a blind.

Our flashing kits are engineered with specific pitch requirements. The roof pitch is important because it ensures that the roof has the proper slope to effectively drain water off of both the flashing and the skylight.
The frame out size is the width and height of the Skylight.

  • Solar Powered Skylight (Flat Roof - VCS)
  • Manual Skylight (Flat Roof - VCM)
  • Flat Roof Skylights (FCM)

    Flat roof skylight Questions:

The FCM must be custom flashed. Your installer should be able to help.

    Contact VELUX for more information.

The FCM must be installed between 0 & 60 degrees. VELUX recommends installing the FCM with a minimum pitch of 3-5 degrees to prevent water pooling on the glass.

The FCM can be used on roofs with a pitch of up to 60 degrees.

When framing out, leave a clearance equal to the overall throat dimension of the flat roof skylight that you're using.

See our custom flashing suggestion for more information on installation.

The flat roof skylight can be installing in a landscape or even a diamond shape orientation. VELUX recommends that the FCM 2270 is not installed in a landscape orientation.

The FCM comes standard with our 'High Performance' glazing.

This glazing provides a laminated internal pane to meet Australian Standard AS 1288 which is required for skylights installed greater than 3m above floor level. This glazing also comes with NEAT™ coating to reduce cleaning frequency.

Yes, we have  a range of manual and solar powered models.

Yes, blinds are available, however they are not held as a stocked item and it may not always be possible to install a blind.

You should consider using the FS skylight if you want to use a blind.

  • Roof Windows (GGL/GPL)

    Roof window questions

The GPL (dual action) must be installed between 15 & 55 degrees, however the GGL (centre pivot) can be installed between 15 & 90 degrees.

If your roof pitch is less than 15 degrees, you must use a custom flashing kit with a pitch adapter.

Our flashing kits are engineered with specific pitch requirements. The roof pitch is important because it ensures that the roof has the proper slope to effectively drain water off of both the flashing and the roof window.

The spacing between rafters must be the width of the Roof Window plus 40-60mm, battens are then spaced the height of the Skylight plus 45mm apart.

    Download framing out instruction.

Roof windows cannot be installed sideways.

You may consider using manual skylights instead, as they have a 'landscape' size available (S01 size: 1140x700).

VELUX COMBI-FLASHING is engineered for this purpose. However, the pitch of the roof must be 15° or greater.

The roof windows are available in our 'Laminated Glazing'.

'Laminated Glazing' is double glazed for thermal efficiency and incorporates laminated internal pane to meet Australian Standard AS 1288 which is required for skylights/roof windows installed greater than 3m above floor level.

VELUX does not recommend the addition of any store-bought film to the glass of our roof windows. The addition of store-bought film or tint will void the warranty on the glass. However, our glass is manufactured with a LoE coating and injected with Argon gas which makes our skylights very energy efficient. In addition, we also offer several blind options that can be added to our skylights and roof windows to regulate light and heat.

Yes, insect screens (ZIL) are available as an option extra for roof windows. However, we do not recommend using insect screens on GGL centre pivot roof windows.

All current skylight have an exterior neutral grey colour that blends well with most roofing materials (similar to COLORBOND ironstone grey).

The internal colour is lacquered pine.

Centre pivot roof windows can be turned 180 degrees.

The maximum opening of a dual action window varies depends in the size and roof pitch, however they will open close the horizontal position.

Most manual roof windows can be converted into electric models.

Obtain your product ID code then contact VELUX on 1300 859 856 for further details.

Yes, blinds are available for new roof windows. If you have an existing roof window (purchased prior to April 2015) please contact VELUX with your product code to see if blinds are still available.

    More information on VELUX blinds.

A roof window is a unit designed for installation "in-reach", such as attics. The roof window sash can be pivoted so the homeowner can clean the exterior pane of glass from inside the home. Skylights, on the other hand, are usually installed in "out-of-reach" applications.

  • Sun Tunnels (TWR/TWF)

    Sun Tunnel questions:

The Sun Tunnel must be installed between 15 & 60 degrees.

Consider using a VELUX skylight if your roof is not within this range.

Our flashing kits are engineered with specific pitch requirements. The roof pitch is important because it ensures that the roof has the proper slope to effectively drain water off of both the flashing and the skylight.

The Sun tunnel is suitable for tiled & corrugated iron roofs over 15°. A version is also available for Slate roofs.

The Sun Tunnel is not suitable for roof pitches below 15°.

Use a VELUX skylight if a Sun Tunnel isn't suitable for your roof.

The Flexible Sun Tunnel is suitable for short tunnel lengths (preferable 1 meter or less) or when obstacles in the roof space prevent the use of a Rigid Sun Tunnel.

The Rigid Sun Tunnel should be used for longer tunnel lengths.

The outer pane on the roof is a flat 4mm toughened glass pane.

Both the Flexible and Rigid Sun Tunnels have a tunnel diameter of 350mm.

The tunnel length of the Flexible is 2200mm. The Rigid comes with 1650mm.

Additional 1240mm lengths of Rigid tunnel are available; part number ZTR 0K14.

A precise answer depends on many factors including the roof orientation, tunnel length, tunnel angles, time of day, season of the year, etc. However, VELUX Sun tunnels are ideal for hallways, walk-in-robes, pantries, toilets and other small areas without natural light. The same size rigid tunnel will always transmit more light than a flexible tunnel of the same size, length and configuration.

For other areas, VELUX recommends the use of skylights.

  • Blinds

    Blind Questions:

    In most cases, yes.

Obtain your product code and contact VELUX for more information.

Not necessarily, a competent home handy man should be able to install a VELUX blind.

A blockout blind will block approximately 100% of the light and will block approximately 40% of heat.

A honeycomb blind will block approximately 95% of the light and will block approximately 60% of heat.

Due to their location, VELUX blinds rarely need cleaning, however you can gently clean the fabric of a blockout blind with a damp cloth & mild soapy water; for a honeycomb blind using a feather duster will be sufficient.

Extendable rods (ZXT 200) are available for manually operated blinds which extend between 100 & 180cm.

Solar powered blinds are also available which allow you to operate the blinds with a remote keypad.

Solar Blinds contain a solar panel which charge the integrated rechargeable battery (supplied), this will charge during the day even with minimum sunlight. The KLI 110 keypad provided can be wall mounted and operates the blind with the touch of a button, AAA batteries are required to power the KLI 110 (batteries provided).

A remote keypad is supplied with each solar powered blind. They can also be operated by the KLR 200 remote control.

Download the KLI 110 instructions for pairing procedure.

If you require assistance please call our technical department on 1300 859 856.

Yes, all VELUX blinds can be operated via the KLR 200 remote control keypad.

A manual blind cannot be converted into an electric blind or solar powered blind. The manual blind would have to be removed and replaced with a solar powered blind.
