VELUX has a long history of fulfilling consumer desires for natural light and ventilation, going all the way back to our founding in Denmark back in 1941.

The company beginnings were out of necessity. After the devastation of WWII, there was a tremendous lack of housing and commercial space throughout Europe. The VELUX founder, Mr. Villum Kann Rasmussen, saw an opportunity to provide more space by bringing natural light and air into attic spaces through the roof. This idea led to the design of the first roof windows, which were initially used to convert unused attics into classrooms.

From those early beginnings, VELUX has expanded throughout the world by providing ways to convert unusable space into the best room in the house.

Quality, development and improvement are important keywords at VELUX. This is especially true in our test department, where products are continuously exposed to all kinds of tests as an integral part of our company’s efforts to develop and improve our products.

Testing
Our VELUX test facilities ensure that new products comply with regulations and market demands to technical performance. And they ensure that our products are able to withstand all the different climatic conditions that VELUX products are exposed to in the markets where they are sold.

Our test procedures include such aspects as air and water tightness in a test chamber and a weather simulator, mechanical tests, durability tests, U-value tests, sound insulation tests and visual inspection of the surface quality.

These tests simulate the various weather conditions that will affect VELUX windows in the different climates where they are installed, for instance heavy snowload, heat and cold, wind and rain and many years of use, including 25,000 opening and closing operations.

International Approval
Our thorough internal tests are then followed by tests and approvals by internationally accredited laboratories to ensure that any new products have been tested in every detail before they are installed in people’s homes.

Quality Assurance
At our factories, each step of the process is carefully checked, including inspection of received components to ensure that they meet our specifications, for instance through continuous inspection of part components.

And the finished products are tested to ensure that they meet the extensive functional demands and visual quality, for instance of the surface, specified by VELUX.

Random checks are made to continually test the product’s technical performance, including air and water tightness and the strength of corner sections.
